Alphabet Commits $15bn to Establish Artificial Intelligence Data Center in the Indian Subcontinent
The parent firm of Google Alphabet Inc. is set to invest $15bn for constructing an AI data hub in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.
The facility, that is planned in the coastal city of Visakhapatnam, is going to be a segment of Google's global network of AI centres distributed over 12 countries.
"It's the largest artificial intelligence center that we are committing funds to anywhere in the world, excluding the United States," the CEO of Google Cloud said at an gathering in capital Delhi this Tuesday, mentioning that the funding will be allocated over the next five years.
The announcement arrives during a period President Trump of the United States has been asking companies from the United States to prioritise domestic investment.
India's Increasing Significance in AI Infrastructure
The nation has emerged as a prime location for AI data centres. The country's low data costs and swiftly increasing online population have made it a focal point for cloud and AI expansion for tech giants.
"The facility will introduce our industry-leading technology to companies and individuals in India, enhancing artificial intelligence advancement and stimulating expansion nationwide," stated Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet.
Initiative Particulars
A formal agreement to complete the venture will be signed soon, local government officials confirmed.
"It is a significant advancement for our state's technological advancement, progress, and worldwide position," said the technology official Minister Nara Lokesh.
The venture will integrate AI and cloud systems with renewable energy systems and an expanded fibre-optic network.
Andhra Pradesh's Data Center Vision
The project forms part of the local administration's plan to create six gigawatts of data centre capacity by the year 2029.
Data centres are actual buildings that accommodate the networking and computing devices that entities use to collect, process, store, and distribute data.
These include computer servers, storage systems and network equipment like network routers and security firewalls, in addition to the required energy and climate management infrastructure to function properly.
