American Online Personality Penalized Following Mass E-Bike Ride on Sydney Harbour Bridge

NSW authorities have levied a penalty against an US-based online influencer and served two traffic infringement notices for reported reckless operation after a large group of e-bike riders converged on the famous Sydney landmark during the busy commute on Tuesday.

The Incident: An Illegal Gathering

A group of around 40 people operating electric bikes and motorbikes proceeded along the primary roadway of the bridge, where cycling is prohibited. The assembly subsequently reversed direction and rode through the city’s CBD and Haymarket.

"This had a risk of serious injury or fatalities," stated a senior police official David Driver on Wednesday.

Law enforcement indicated they did not immediately pursue the group out of safety concerns but rather found the group at a scenic Sydney lookout near the city gardens, where they dispersed.

Penalties Issued for Influencer

On Saturday, police stated they had served the US social media influencer known as the influencer, twenty-six, with two traffic infringement notices for careless operation (not involving death or prior injury), with a penalty of over five hundred dollars and penalty points each, connected to the bridge incident. They added that the investigation is ongoing.

The influencer reportedly has over 3.4 million subscribers on one platform and over 1.2m on Instagram.

Creator's Response

The online figure spoke with a major newspaper this week following the event spread rapidly on digital platforms, stating he was sorry for giving "bike life" a bad reputation.

"I accept the blame. That was one of the safest ride-outs I’ve ever seen," he said. "I’m coming here as a guest, and I intend to abide by the rules and standards of the city. When I decided to do a public meeting it was not meant to include a ride-out, it was just to greet people near the bridge."

"I’m unfamiliar with the city, it was my fault we ended up on the bridge and I had a decision to make: whether the group rides the full length of the bridge and turns around, an illegal act. Or we turn around, basically, before entering the bridge. And I made the decision at the time to turn around."

National Debate on E-Bike Regulation

The increase of electric bicycles on streets across the country has prompted increasing demands for regulation. A senior government official, the minister, recently said that illegal ebikes were a "complete hazard on the road."

"Young people have engaged in reckless acts on bikes ever since the early bicycle [but] the injuries that are presenting at our hospital emergency departments are truly severe," the minister stated. "We must make sure we stop these things entering the country [and] officers are granted the powers to take strong action, to take them away, to crush them, to dispose of them."

NSW reported 226 injuries associated with ebikes in 2024. However, in the first seven months of the following year, that number jumped to 233 injuries plus four fatalities.
