Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson revealed he narrowly avoided a life-threatening collision during Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix when two safety personnel darted across the track right in his path

The alarming incident occurred on the third rotation when safety workers were observed on the racing surface as Lawson was rejoining the race following an early pitstop to replace his compromised front wing

Driver's Immediate Reaction

Moments later, Racing Bulls driver Lawson communicated to his race engineer saying: "You've got to be joking? Could you believe what happened? I might have... taken their lives"

"I honestly couldn't believe what I was seeing"

"I came out on a new set of hards, and then I approached Turn One and suddenly there were two dudes sprinting across the track"

"I came close to striking one of them, truthfully, it was incredibly risky"

Track Safety Questioned

"Obviously there's been a communication breakdown somehow but I've never encountered that before, and I can't recall observing that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"

"We cannot comprehend how on a live track safety personnel can be allowed to just sprint across the track like that. I'm clueless about the cause, I'm certain we'll get some kind of clarification, but it really can't happen again"

Governing Body Reviewing

Formula 1's governing body, the FIA, is thoroughly reviewing the situation

"After an occurrence at turn one, race control was notified that fragments were located on the track at the critical section of that bend" declared the governing body

"During the third lap, marshals were alerted and made ready to enter the track and recover the debris once all cars had passed"

"The moment it was realized that Lawson had entered the pits, the orders to send personnel were canceled and a double yellow flag was shown in that area"

"We are still investigating what happened following that moment"
