Labuschagne Omitted from Australian One-Day International Lineup to Face Team India
Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped from the three-match ODI series versus India, as high-performing Queensland teammate Matt Renshaw getting a surprise selection.
Recent Form Lead to Exclusion
Labuschagne has been omitted from the one-day international squad after being dismissed for one in each of his two innings during the recent series against South Africa in August. Labuschagne has a highest score of 47 in his most recent ten ODI innings.
Labuschagne has played 68 ODIs and scored 1,871 ODI runs at an batting average of 34.64, but will now focus on earning a return to the Test side ahead of the Ashes beginning in Perth on 21 November.
Renshaw's Return and Team Changes
Labuschagne has shown signs of a improvement in form with a score of 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw also hit a century for the Bulls in the identical match against Tasmania.
Renshaw is in line to make his first white-ball appearance in the forthcoming series against India after his last inclusion in an ODI squad in 2022.
He has played 14 Tests with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also seeking a Test return as Australia look for a answer to their opening batting issues.
Pace Returns and Injury Updates
Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc is back for the ODI series against India after taking a break since performing well for Australia in the whitewash of West Indies in July.
Big Bash star Mitch Owen might get his ODI debut after being concussed in the lead up to Australia’s previous 50-over series against South Africa.
Skipper Pat Cummins remains on the sidelines as he aims to recover from a back injury in time to lead Australia in the opening Test of the Ashes in November.
Team Announcement Strategy and Schedule
Australia have named a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the Ashes on the horizon, although Glenn Maxwell will sit out the five-match series due to a wrist problem suffered in New Zealand.
Mitch Marsh will lead both the ODI and T20 teams after hitting a ton in the final game against New Zealand to secure a series clean sweep last week.
“Selectors have announced a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series as there will be player management through the back end of the series as players get ready for the summer through domestic first-class matches,” selection chief George Bailey said.
“The majority of the T20 squad will stay as a group as it’s an important period in the preparation for the T20 World Cup next year, however we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously get ready specific players for the Test series ahead.”
Australia’s three-game ODI series against India begins on October 19 in Perth, before the rivals play five T20s from 29 October.
