Teenager Found Deceased After False Accusations of Stealing Cremated Remains
A teenage boy was discovered deceased just days following being wrongly blamed of stealing the ashes of a dead infant during a burglary, an inquest has learned.
Heartbreaking Finding
The young boy's mother and father discovered his body in his room at his Connah's Quay residence on November 19th, 2021.
Untrue Allegations Begin
The inquest learned how his parent got a communication on 8 November 2021 via social media, from a individual asking if Kai was her child. The communication stated: "Inform him thanks for breaking into my flat."
In a testimony read to the court, Lisa Lloyd said the individual had been in the news, claiming her infant's remains had been stolen in a burglary - a claim which was false.
Police Inquiry
An official inquiry from authorities later determined the supposed break-in complainant had "provided false information" and "evidence shows that said property was never stolen in the first place".
Media reports about the supposed taken remains attracted social media responses, and although Kai was not named in the posts, his mother said people "understood it was him".
The "online posts were extremely distressing", she said.
Emotional Health Effect
She added that Kai had been identified with moderate attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and as part of that disorder, other individuals' opinions genuinely were important to him.
"This must have hurt him deeply," she commented, "especially when this was untrue".
The teenager was arrested at home, but no evidence was found. He was transported to a police station and later released pending further inquiry.
Police said they would be in touch, the hearing heard, but had failed to reached out to the relatives by the time of his passing.
Withdrawal and Anxiety
His mother said Kai "became isolated" after the detention and "repeatedly inquired me whether I had heard anything from the police", because his ADHD meant sometimes "a minute could seem like days".
When she spoke to him about the supposed incident, she said her son told her he had gone into the house because the resident who lived there had said he could use the bathroom anytime he needed, but denied taking anything.
Digital Bullying
In a combined testimony between her and her husband, Mrs Lloyd said her son was being harassed digitally after the allegations.
The inquest learned that a young adult urged the teenager to kill himself.
She had no concerns on the evening before he passed away, describing how she had listened to him "chuckling and teasing".
She portrayed him as a "caring, loving" boy, and said her "relatives is totally shattered".
He had been "clearly hiding his worries", she stated, noting that he could not stand to have anybody "think bad of him".
Educational Response
The inquest received testimony from school staff at Connah's Quay High School.
On 8 November, she "heard some boys talking that Kai had been arrested and that was the first I heard".
"He informed me... he'd done nothing wrong," she continued.
After the conversation, the staff member said she called the family's parents' landline and left a voicemail saying she had communicated to Kai about the allegations.
The proceedings heard his family said they did not got that communication.
Official Conclusion
Senior coroner told the inquest he would wait for reports regarding what enhancements had been made to dealing with individuals with ADHD, before determining whether he should make a prevention of subsequent deaths report.
Delivering a narrative conclusion, he said: "Approximately November 8th, 2021, unsubstantiated allegations were made against Kai Benjamin Lloyd, a young individual.
"Probably untruths were subsequently embellished and amplified through the platform of social media.
"During November 11th, he was questioned by the authorities and following his interview he was freed while investigations continued."
The official concluded: "There is no evidence that the actions or omissions of any organization led to or contributed to his death and although it was the outcome of a self-inflicted action it is not possible to determine his purpose."
