Woman Stabbed in Birmingham Bus Shelter Assault Succumbs to Injuries

A woman who was stabbed to her neck area during a random assault at a bus stop in Birmingham has died, authorities verified.

The victim, who was 34, was targeted in Smallbrook Queensway, right beside Bullring shopping complex, shortly before 21:00 GMT on Friday, according to police statements.

Djeison Rafael, 21, was presented at Birmingham Magistrates Court on Monday, charged over the attack.

He was previously accused with attempted murder but following the woman's death charges were upgraded to include murder.

Police Response

The force said police personnel will remain in the downtown area on Monday providing public assurance, while detectives assisted the woman's family.

Detectives are appealing for witnesses who may have seen Mr Rafael, who is described as a Black British national, reportedly dressed in an all-grey tracksuit, black hat, trainers and rucksack.

Incident Location

The knife attack occurred near the Bullring shopping centre, across from primary access point of New Street railway station.

Law enforcement confirmed they were treating it as "unprovoked attack" with investigators stating they were working to understand why it happened.

Eyewitness Reports

An area worker, employed in the vicinity, recounted the emergency response when she finished her work period at about 22:00 on Friday.

She characterized the location as "quite chaotic", adding that co-workers reported hearing a commotion at about 21:00.

"A lot of my colleagues use transit services, take the tram... our security is compromised essentially, in the downtown area."

Ashley Birks, twenty-five, resident of Stoke, said he came to Birmingham quite frequently to see his girlfriend who lives in the city, and was concerned regarding the incident.

"It causes concern about my partner," he stated.

"She lacks transportation and works at major concert locations... considering a totally random act [happened], you know, it's horrible."
