Zelenskyy Declares Readiness for Wartime Elections In Response to Criticism from U.S. President Donald Trump.

The President of Ukraine Zelenskyy has stated he is willing to hold a presidential election amid the current war, on the condition that the Verkhovna Rada and foreign partners approve. This statement is a response to allegations from the U.S. President that he was holding onto his position.

Obviously frustrated by the comments from overseas, Zelenskyy stressed that "The decision for the citizens of Ukraine, and not for individuals from foreign states, with all due respect to our partners."

However, he promised to explore options for carrying out a vote in the coming months. "Because this topic is brought up by the President of the United States, our ally, I will reply succinctly: listen, I am prepared for elections," Zelenskyy remarked on Tuesday night.

"In addition, I am requesting ... the United States to help me, possibly together with EU partners, to ensure protection for the vote, and subsequently within the following 60-90 day period Ukraine will be prepared to organize the elections. I myself have the determination and willingness for this," he concluded.

Trump's Assertions and The Country's Legal Situation

The comments were made by Trump in a wide-ranging interview conducted by the publication Politico earlier on Tuesday. "Ukraine have not held an election in a long time," stated the American leader. "Consider this, they speak of a democratic nation, but it gets to a stage where it's no longer democratic any more."

Zelenskyy's five-year term officially ended in May of last year, but the country's fundamental law forbids elections in a time of armed conflict. Furthermore, his rivals have often said that safety and political considerations do not permit holding an election while the war continues.

"It would only create damage," commented Serhiy Rakhmanin. "Zelenskyy is the commander-in-chief, and the country is in a situation where we don't have that possibility, regardless of disagreements we might have with him. It would only help the opponent," he continued.

Practical and Constitutional Hurdles

Zelenskyy identified two primary questions that require solutions: the logistical challenge of enabling soldiers, the many displaced people, and those in occupied territories to cast ballots, and additionally, how to lawfully conduct a vote while a state of war is ongoing.

He asked for counsel from partner nations on securing the elections, and from members of parliament on how to change the legislation to enable a vote. "{I am expecting suggestions from partners, I am waiting for suggestions from our MPs, and I am prepared to participate in the elections," said Zelenskyy.

Wider Diplomatic Context

Zelenskyy made these remarks while traveling back to Ukraine after wrapping up a diplomatic tour to multiple EU nations. This coincides with the White House has reportedly been pushing on Kyiv to agree to a ceasefire agreement.

Over the weekend, Trump's son, Donald Trump Jr., asserted at a conference that Zelenskyy was extending the war due to worries of losing power. He also indicated that his father might "walk away" from Ukraine if the conflict does not end. "{It's not correct. But it's not entirely wrong," said Trump, when asked about his son's statement.

There are indications that the U.S. has floated the idea Ukraine should cede the Donbas region to achieve peace, a concession that would be extremely controversial within Ukraine. Furthermore, there is presently no sign that Russia is ready to accept any agreement, even a deal that might appear beneficial to Moscow.
